Papan – Home of Sybil Kathigasu

The home of Malayan WWII heroine, Sybil Kathigasu is located at 74 Main Street, Papan. Sybil Kathigasu is the only Malayan woman who was awarded a George Medal for her bravery and courage. During WWII Sybil Kathigasu and her husband had secretly treated and operated on the resistant fighters who were wounded. Sybil Kartigasu had defied the Japanese Army’s orders by secretly listening to BBC broadcasts during the War. The “hidden holes” where the radio sets were kept can still be seen there. As the site is privately owned, permission is required from the owner.
